Writing Techs…

Well in the being there was Crayola Crayons or maybe it was finger paints or maybe something else. From there it evolved into pencils, pens, & markers. It stayed there for years & years. I probably didn’t try anything new until I was 13 or 14 when I actually used an old electric typewriter (before that my mom typed anything of  mine that needed to be typed). I don’t remember if it was her making me learn or if it was me wanting to do it for myself. It should be noted that I evetually became a decent typist (about 50 wpm with about 95% accuracy). It was at that time (13-14 years of age) that I discovered & fell in love with the untra-fab fountain pen. It’s a lover affair I still have today. Nothing much changed until I was about 18 when I got my first computer & that was mostly used for college papers & really bad teenage poetry. It stayed that way through college & then work. Now most of my “written” communication is based in text messages & emails. However, as I stated before if I hand write anything there’s about a 97% chance that it’ll be done in fountain pen. Right now it’s a given in that in my pocket or shoulder bag is my $200 Waterman Fountain Pen (& usually a disposable Fountain Pen as well), it’s not lie – I get anxious without it. Lastly, I’m dreading the day when there’s a machine attached to my brain that translates my thoughts into words because I think some crazy messed up shit from time to time.

Style? Part One

Style when it comes to writing is how we say what we say. I would specifically say this relates to word choice, voice, & our use of punctuation. For example I tend to write in a very conversational tone & depending on what I’m writing for I try (& I say try) to be a minimalistic as possible; this is especially true when it’s work related. I also tend to use as many abbreviations of words as possible & I’m always excited when I learn a new one.

When it comes to actual writing – I mean on say paper…I know that’s taboo in today’s electronic age but some of us still do. When I write on real paper about 90% of the time I use a fountain pen & when I don’t have a fountain pen I get very anxious. Other then the fountain pen the same rules generally always apply.

Welcome

Blogs…blogs…to be honest I think over the past five or six years I’ve started just as many blogs. None last more then about ten posts & maybe six weeks. However, if I plan to pass ENGL 328 I’ll need to do many more posts & keep this going until the end of the year.

I fancy myself a bit of a writer, as I have a degree in Writing. I’ve been published a couple times (See the 2001 Issue of Cellar Roots). Anyways, I’ve been swearing up & down I’m going to write a novel one of these days…however, life keeps getting in the way. I do have about 75+ pages (maybe eight or nine stories/chapters in various stages).

Maybe this class will be a little bit of a push…
